Quench — Terms of Service
Effective 2026-07-11 · Last updated 2026-07-11
1. Acceptance
By downloading or using Quench (the "App"), you agree to these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, do not use the App. The App is published by an independent iOS developer (Apple Developer Team ID ZM8LF8494F); "we," "us," and "our" mean that developer.
2. What Quench is — and what it is not
Quench is a personal shop tool for knifemakers. From a bundled, cited steel corpus and the information you enter — your shop equipment, a steel, a blade thickness, and a target hardness — it generates a heat-treat schedule, solves temper temperatures from a curve, runs a stage-timed session, logs your batches with their measured hardness, and computes a personal hardness offset from your own results.
Quench schedules; it does not certify. Every temperature, time, medium, and temper curve is compiled from publicly available manufacturer datasheets and references as facts, cited per steel with a last-verified date, and all descriptive prose is original. The App uses no third party's proprietary test data, charts, or ratings. Predictions are estimates carrying ranges and calibration labels; the App guarantees no outcome, makes no safety certification, and provides no forging, grinding, or metallurgy instruction. Heat treating and quenching involve high temperatures and flammable media and carry real risk. You are responsible for your own safety and results. Always verify every figure against your steel supplier's current datasheet.
3. Subscriptions and the Pro tier
3.1 Free tier
The App is free to download and use, with these limits: six starter steels (1084, 1095, 80CrV2, 5160, O1, AEB-L) with complete schedules, the full HT Session Mode with its Live Activity, five batch logs, and the shop profile. Export of a kiln program and other Pro tooling are not included on the free tier.
3.2 Pro tier
Pro features unlock when you complete the Lifetime purchase or start a subscription. Three products are offered:
- Pro Lifetime — $19.99 one-time, non-consumable in-app purchase, no auto-renewal (a $13.99 introductory price may apply for a limited launch window).
- Pro Yearly — $7.99 per year, with a 7-day free trial for first-time subscribers.
- Pro Monthly — $1.99 per month.
All three unlock the identical Pro feature set. Prices are in USD; Apple displays the equivalent local price at purchase.
3.3 Auto-renewal and billing (Yearly and Monthly)
The Yearly and Monthly subscriptions automatically renew until canceled. Renewal is charged within 24 hours before the end of the current period unless auto-renewal is turned off at least 24 hours before that end. Payment is charged to your Apple ID. Manage or cancel in Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions on your iOS device. We do not offer refunds for the unused portion of an active period; refund eligibility is determined solely by Apple under its published policies. The Lifetime purchase is a single charge with no recurring billing.
3.4 Free trial forfeiture
If you start the 7-day free trial on the Yearly subscription and cancel during the trial, you keep Pro access through the end of the trial and are not charged. If you do not cancel, your subscription begins at the end of the trial at the published price. Any unused portion of the free trial is forfeited if you buy Pro before the trial ends.
4. Pro features
Pro provides the following features. The behavior described here is binding on us — if a future App update materially changes any of these descriptions, we will revise this section.
- Full steel corpus: Pro unlocks schedule generation for every steel in the bundled library (the free tier covers six starter steels). Every temperature, time, medium, and temper curve is compiled from manufacturer datasheets and publicly available references as facts, with per-steel source citations and a last-verified date shown in the app; all descriptive prose is original. The app schedules and never certifies an outcome. Verify every figure against your steel supplier's current datasheet.
- Temper solver and re-temper tool: Temper temperatures are interpolated on-device from the documented temper curve toward your target hardness and clamped, with a visible warning, to the curve's honest reach. The re-temper tool never outputs a hardness-increasing cycle: when a blade is too soft it states that a re-heat-treat is required. Predictions are estimates, not guarantees.
- Kiln program export: A generic ramp / setpoint / hold segment table is generated on-device and shared as text or PDF for manual entry into your controller. It makes no claim of compatibility with any brand's file format, files nothing, and transmits nothing during generation.
- Personal calibration: The app computes a per-steel hardness offset from the difference between your measured and predicted HRC across your own logged batches (median over two or more measurements, clamped), stored locally, and labels adjusted predictions as personal. It is a convenience estimate derived only from data you entered.
- Custom steels: Pro subscribers may author their own steel records in the same schema. These are user-supplied data, badged as such, stored locally, and are not verified by the app against any datasheet.
- Unlimited batches and photos: Pro subscribers may keep an unlimited number of batch logs and attach unlimited photos (the free tier keeps the five most recent batches). Photos are captured with the camera or selected via Apple's system photo picker, attached to a batch, and stored locally for display only. Nothing is uploaded.
- Steel comparison: An on-device side-by-side view of two steels' process records. It presents the same cited data shown elsewhere in the app and makes no recommendation or guarantee.
- Widgets: Rendered on-device by WidgetKit. They read only data you have already entered, via an App Group shared container. No network calls are made.
- Batch share cards: An image generated on-device by ImageRenderer from a batch you logged, handed to the iOS Share Sheet. It carries a small app mark and transmits nothing during generation.
5. Your responsibilities
- You are responsible for the accuracy of every value you record and for verifying each steel figure against your supplier's current datasheet before you rely on it.
- You are responsible for your own shop safety — high temperatures, quench media, and fire risk are yours to manage. The App's single per-session safety note is a brief reminder, not a safety course.
- You are responsible for maintaining iOS Backups (iCloud Backup or Finder/iTunes) so your records and attached photos survive device loss. Quench has no remote copy of your data and cannot restore it.
- You will not use the App as a substitute for your own judgment, your steel supplier's datasheet, or professional advice where appropriate.
6. Disclaimers and limitation of liability
The App is provided "AS IS" and "AS AVAILABLE" without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement. To the maximum extent permitted by law, our aggregate liability arising out of or relating to the App is limited to the amount you paid us, through Apple, in the twelve months preceding the claim. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including lost data, ruined steel, a cracked or warped blade, an under- or over-hardened edge, property damage, injury, or business interruption, arising from your use of the App or reliance on any schedule, prediction, or reference figure it produces.
7. Apple End User License Agreement
Your use of the App is also governed by Apple's standard End User License Agreement for licensed applications, available at https://www.apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/dev/stdeula/. If these Terms conflict with the Apple EULA, these Terms govern as between you and us; the Apple EULA governs as between you and Apple.
8. Trademarks
Steel names, manufacturer names, and any equipment brands referenced in the App and in this document belong to their respective holders. Quench is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to any of them, and references them only to identify the steels and equipment you work with.
9. Changes to these terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be surfaced in the App on next launch. Continued use after a change constitutes acceptance.
10. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the United States and the State of California, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Disputes will be resolved in courts located in California, except that either party may seek injunctive relief in any court of competent jurisdiction to protect intellectual property rights.
